It’s never a secret when a roommate is having sex, and nobody wants to hear, smell or even be around that situation. Often times, it can cause confrontations between roommates or a setback in one’s sex life. But never fear, there are ways this all can be prevented.
Be up front with the roommates. Tell them there’s going to be someone “special” coming over and that some private time would be nice. This should give them the heads up that you’ll be having sex tonight. Also, it’s a smart idea to set up some ground rules; make sure everyone is comfortable with your plans for that night, and discuss which rooms are okay to have sex in. Most likely roommates will not approve of having sex in the kitchen, living room or their bedrooms.
Never have sex if a roommate is in the room. It’s never a smart idea and will undoubtedly cause confrontations. There are ways you’ll be able to tell that a roommate is not okay with you having sex while they’re sleeping — they might grunt, or make other subtle noises to let you know they’re annoyed. If it is a dire need to have sex at that exact moment, go back to your partner’s room. Respect your roommate’s space so they let you have special people over in the future.
Don’t leave your special someone in your dorm, apartment or house when you’re not there. Most roommates would not want your lover hanging around when you aren’t with them. It can be an invasion of personal space and you don’t know what your lover is doing when you’re not home.
Turn on loud music to block out the noise. Sometimes, noise can be an issue when you’re having sex. It can keep your roommate up, distract them from doing homework and disrupt their night. Put on your favorite type of music, as long as your roommates are hearing that and not the sex, they’ll be happy. Another good tip in avoiding noise: If the bed touches the wall, pull it back a few inches, this will prevent banging.
Be polite and clean up after yourself. Sex is a very smelly, messy process. The smell of condoms, lube, etc. may be one of your favorite smells but it probably isn’t your roommate’s. After sex, spray some air freshener and clean up all the undergarments, condoms, chocolate sauce and whipped cream.
Sex is difficult when you are living with roommates. But if you are courteous, respectful and communicate with your roommates, it shouldn’t have to be.
