Let’s Talk About Sex: Is college the time for a relationship?

I’ve noticed that relationships aren’t taken that seriously in college. There are a few students that are in serious relationships, but more students tend to have fuck buddies, or people they casually have sex with, instead of significant others. We’d rather get naked with each other than actually go out to dinner. In college, it’s often about how good the sex is, not how nice the person is.

College is often considered to be the best four years of your life. It’s the only time that you can do whatever you want. You can go and have one night stands, or have sex with three people in one night without judgement. It’s the time to explore and find yourself. It’s not the time to be in a relationship.

College is the time to be casual and get to know different people. It’s the time to get your number of sexual partners up or improve your techniques. Being in a relationship may help you with that, but by hooking up with different people, you’re able to narrow down what kind of person you really want to be with in the future. While you’re still here, you should take advantage of the opportunity to not be tied down.

Many students may not want to be in a serious relationship because they don’t want to deal with the pressures of getting rejected or being committed. Students already have so much they have to worry about; they don’t need to stress about a relationship, too.

Having been both in a relationship and single in college, I prefer the single life. When I’m single, I have more time to worry about myself. I put myself first instead of my significant other. If I do something stupid, I don’t have to worry about embarrassing my partner.

Having a “fuck buddy” is a lot easier to manage in college. You don’t have the obligation to buy them a Christmas, Valentine’s or birthday gift, or deal with other obligations. It’s like dating someone without all the responsibility of a relationship.

On top of that, dating can be very tricky in college. There’s an invisible line that people don’t want to cross. Many students may not know when to text their significant other, or even know where they stand. Some people don’t want to seem creepy or obsessive.

I’m not saying that having a relationship in college is bad. There are chances to meet your husband or wife. Everyone who’s in a relationship in college deserves a lot of credit. However, finding your spouse in college is a one-in-a-million chance. If you’re dating someone in college and don’t see yourself with them in the future, it’s a smart idea to end it. You don’t want to waste your college years on someone who isn’t important to you.
