The No. 3 University of Colorado men’s lacrosse team (4-1) travelled to San Diego on Friday night to take on No. 17 San Diego State University (5-3). Colorado dominated all four quarters of the game, defeating the Aztecs 17-5.

The Buffs came out firing in the first quarter taking an early 5-0 lead over SDSU, and they stayed on top the entire game. Freshman midfielder Max Wiesner scored his second goal with five minutes left in the first quarter, extending CU’s lead to 7-0. The Aztecs managed to score one goal at the end of the quarter, giving Colorado a 7-1 lead going into the second.

Colorado continued to expand its lead in the second quarter, jumping out to an 11-2 lead over SDSU. Sophomore attackman Ben Wharton scored the final two goals of the quarter to give the Buffs a 13-2 lead going into halftime.

The Buffaloes had 18 shots in the half, nine coming in each quarter. Additionally, sophomore goalie Jensen Makarov had 10 saves with only two goals scored against him.

CU made a goalie change in the second half, allowing freshman goalie Wayne Hofmann to play his first minutes of the season. Hoffman finished the second half with 11 saves and three goals scored against him.

Colorado and San Diego State both added two goals during the third quarter, allowing the Buffs to maintain their comfortable lead heading into the final quarter of play.

The Aztecs quickly scored two unanswered goals in the fourth quarter, cutting Colorado’s lead to 15-5. However, the Buffaloes gave them no chance to rally. CU scored the final two goals of the game moving Colorado to a 17-5 victory and its fourth win on the season. Senior attackman John Clayton finished the day with a hat-trick.

Colorado looks to continue its four game winning streak against No. 1 Chapman University on Sunday, March 13 at 1:00 p.m. at Chapman Stadium.
