Men’s basketball adds former San Diego coach Bill Grier as assistant

University of Colorado men’s basketball head coach Tad Boyle announced on Friday that Bill Grier will be an assistant coach for the team.

Grier  served as an assistant coach to Oklahoma State’s Travis Ford this past season, and was previously the head coach at the University of San Diego from 2007 to 2015. He was fired from San Diego after posting only two winning records over his eight seasons at the helm.

Grier’s tenure at USD was marred by a point-shaving scandal in 2011 surrounding former player Brandon Johnson and former assistant coach T.J. Brown. Although the USD program, including Grier, was cleared of any wrongdoing by the NCAA in 2013, Johnson and Brown were sentenced to six months and a year in federal prison respectively.

Before his time at USD, Grier spent 15 years as an assistant coach and defensive coordinator for Gonzaga from 1992-2007.

An Oregon native, Grier is expected to bolster the Buffaloes’ recruiting efforts along the West Coast.

Grier will replace Rodney Billups, Boyle’s former assistant, who has moved on to be the head coach of the University of Denver men’s basketball team.
