Soulful indie rock: Foals
Foals will pay Denver a visit on Tuesday to promote their new album What Went Down. The five-piece band creates music that, when turned up loud, becomes a sort of euphoric anthem of seriously complex poetry. Foals gives fans straight up rock ‘n’ roll and puts an artistic touch on their songs. It forces audiences to think and, above all, listen. What Went Down tackles heavy topics such as vulnerability, passion, rage and anything else that would result in a “tortured soul.”
This English band consists of Yannis Philippakis on vocals and guitar, Jack Bevan on percussions, Jimmy Smith on guitar, Walter Servers on bass and Edwin Congreve on the keyboard. Foals has released four studio albums and performed at multiple festivals since their formation in 2005.
Foals performs with openers Kiev at the Ogden Theatre on April 26 at 8:00 p.m.
Psychedelic indie: The Arcs
The Arcs (Dan Auerbach, Leon Michels, Richard Swift, Homer Steinweiss and Nick Movshon) will perform at the Ogden Theatre on Monday. The band puts a modern spin on psychedelic music. Rolling Stone named their album Yours, Dreamily one of the top 10 albums of 2015. The album title doesn’t lie, though. Their songs take you into a funky dreamland you won’t want to escape from. Their performances are sure to create a laid-back vibe. Their songs are bluesy and soulful, which, when mixed with the flourishes in psychedelic tunes, creates a unique blend and band.
The Arcs perform at the Ogden Theatre with openers Mariachi Flor de Toloache on April 25 at 8:00 p.m.
Classical meets heavy metal: Apocalyptica
Heavy metal gets turned up a notch with Apocalyptica, a Finnish rock band that creates intense metal with the cello. These guys fuse classical structure with the rule-free form that comes with heavy metal to produce a truly enveloping result. Apocalyptica started out playing covers of Metallica songs. The main goal for the quartet is to create the music they love without any sort of rules or regulations. That mantra seems to be working for the band, as the mix of classical and heavy metal puts an interesting spin on the genre.
Apocalyptica performs at the Ogden Theatre with openers 10 Years and Failure Anthem on April 29 at 9:00 p.m.
