New to the University of Colorado this fall is the space minor program, an opportunity for students seeking a better understanding of space and the universe.

The minor is designed to integrate with students’ existing academic tracks, allowing students of all majors and grade levels a chance to explore a passion for the cosmos. In addition to satisfying a student’s curiosity, the program provides a background that will prepare students for the demands of an increasingly technological and professional world and enter into a space-related career.

The framework of the program is simple: after completing the introductory Pathway to Space course, students can choose four elective courses in specialized areas to fulfill the 15-credit requirement. There are several elective options to choose from, including courses that address topics surrounding space science and exploration from a humanities perspective. From Cosmochemistry to Red Star Trek: Russian Science Fiction Between Utopia and Dystopia, the minor offers a great deal of freedom to students wishing to pursue a minor in the program.

To enroll in the program, a student must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.50 and complete the space minor enrollment form, which can be found on the program website. For more details about the minor, students can go to colorado.edu/spaceminor or contact the faculty directors of the program, Chris Koehler at koehler@colorado.edu and Steven Nerem at nerem@colorado.edu.
