Boulder’s Central Park and the surrounding areas drew crowds Labor Day weekend for the 20th annual Boulder Creek Hometown Festival. Live music echoed through downtown as festival goers of all ages danced around the bandstand.

The event also hosted local businesses in a small village of tents on the park’s lawn. Here, festival goers shopped for art, clothing, handmade jewelry and other Boulder-based products. For the broke college students, local restaurants offered food samples, and health professionals provided free hugs.

Despite all the business and food stands set up, many families in attendance spent the weekend closer to the library where carnival rides spun, rubber ducks raced and zucchinis had wheels.

The Great Zucchini Race attracted children of all ages. For $10 they glittered and feathered raw zucchinis and sent them whizzing down a plywood track.

Some green little vehicles rolled safely to the end of the track; others crashed and plummeted to grass below. The victorious squealed, the defeated cried and everyone brought home a green, wheeled squash.
