Opinion: Fashion trend predictions for fall semester

And we’re off! A new school year is underway and there are two questions everyone’s asking: “What are the new fashion trends going to be and who is going to be the one to tell us?”

Well, that’s where I come in.

Now, I know what you’re thinking. “Grace- you wear black Air Forces and have a total of three bras. How do you know what the fashion trends are going to be this year?”

Well, why don’t you let me prove it to you? Sit back, relax and let mama tell you what to wear this upcoming school year.

Let’s start off with an essential: the winter coat. We saw black puffers and we saw, heard, touched, tasted and smelled Carhartt loose-fit jackets. Both are nice, but we need a touch of femininity this winter. I’m predicting 70’s-inspired fur-lined coats.

You will probably still see boys in Carhartt- I think it takes away from their style to be seen without Carhartt. For girls, it’s time for a change. We yearn to feel pretty again, to free ourselves from the shackles of Carhartt and to feel beautiful in a fur-lined coat. I’m not predicting anything drastic or even cruel to animals, just a nice and synthetic fur to get us through the wintertime. It would go perfectly with tiny boots or even with my next prediction: slim jeans.

Before I go on, I want to make the distinction between slim jeans and skinny jeans. Slim jeans are still loose on the leg yet not as baggy as we are used to. Skinny jeans are what we bought at Abercrombie and Fitch in 2014.

There’s a big difference. Slim jeans are much classier than any of the other types of jeans. This is a jean that reads, “I’m 15 minutes early to class,” “I make my coffee at home instead of going to Starbucks every day” and “When I study at the library, I actually get my work done.”

Nowadays, with how popular it is to be an “academic weapon,” these jeans could gain popularity as well. It’s all about class this year at the University of Colorado Boulder, which takes me to my next prediction: cheetah print.

This one isn’t completely a prediction. You can already start to see it all over the internet, but if you turn your phone off and look around, you don’t see it that often. That’s about to change. Before you know it, we are all going to be looking like a sophisticated Snooki. We have already seen cheetah print on jeans and tights. I can only see this becoming more popular throughout the school year.

Every girl you know will be a cheetah for Halloween this year, but they may adapt the print to their wardrobes permanently.

Ladies will likely need to release their feline wiles after being cooped up in lectures this fall. With all the girls prancing around in their cheetah print, CU Boulder might have to close the rec center. This leads me to my last prediction: matching sets.

The matching set I’m talking about probably isn’t what you anticipated. This set can’t be found at Lululemon, Set Active or Alo Yoga. Instead, it hails from the great country of Canada. That’s right, the matching set I’m talking about is denim on denim, better known as the Canadian Tuxedo.

We’ve seen the popularity of matching sets grow over the past few years and I don’t think it will stop there. I believe that fashion is getting “campier” as we delve more and more into a society built on irony. And what is campier than a matching denim set? Not much if you ask me. You could double a trend by making the bottoms slim jeans! Or, you could become a “Trend Monster” and wear denim on denim with a fur-lined coat and slim jeans.

They’d probably give you the most beautiful girl on campus award! Not that that’s an award you all don’t already have, awww.

Whether you follow my fashion predictions or not, I hope you all have an amazing school year. Let’s make it the best one yet! Sko Buffs!
