Editor’s note: A former version of this story incorrectly stated that a representative of IFC did not respond to all questions, it has since been corrected.
On Oct. 26, the Interfraternity Council on the Hill, an independent council made up of 21 social fraternity chapters off campus, uploaded an Instagram post from the Republican National Committee’s Instagram account.
The post, which features an image of former president Donald Trump, is captioned “We are fighting for the future of our country and President Trump will continue to FIGHT, FIGHT, FIGHT! 10 days to save America!”
The post was taken down by Sunday morning.
In a statement to the CU Independent, Iago Jochamowitz, IFC on The Hill’s vice president of communications, said that it was posted by a former executive member by mistake. He said the former member did not know they were on the IFC account.
“We are aware of the post that was made and the IFC doesn’t hold an official stance in regards to the presidential election,” Jochamowitz said. ”We support all political affiliations and beliefs and are not an organization that has (or) will ever attempt to sway any of our members into voting in a specific manner.”
Jochamowitz did not respond when asked if the former executive member was actively on the board when the post was made.
Reilly Jackson, a junior studying political science, said he thinks that while the IFC took the correct actions by removing the post, it does not look good for the organization.
“They just gotta be more careful when we’re eight days out from an election. That’s something that’s a pretty big clerical mistake,” Jackson said. “Even though they’ve made a statement about retracting the story, I think that, to a degree, there’s a lot of people who are now going to affiliate IFC with supporting Donald Trump.”
