Update #3: The Boulder Police Department has released more information regarding the shelter-in-place that impacted the University of Colorado Boulder’s campus yesterday afternoon. According to a press release, BPD first received a call about a welfare check for a man with a gun who was threatening himself and others around 11:36 a.m. yesterday.
Around 1:38 p.m., the University of Colorado Police received a call from a person on campus who had seen a gun fall out of a man’s pants. CUPD and BPD were able to trace the two calls to the same suspect.
According to BPD, the suspect had an active domestic violence protection order and may have been searching for a woman he formerly had a relationship with.
BPD SWAT was involved with the suspect for multiple hours yesterday evening, following an initial sighting of the suspect’s car. According to the city report, the suspect reportedly committed suicide around 7:15 p.m. yesterday after unsuccessful attempts to encourage the suspect to surrender peacefully.
The university released its last update at 7:45 p.m. when the shelter-in-place of the area around 40th and Table Mesa had been lifted. The release noted that there would be an increased police presence in the area for the following hours.
“(It was) a fluid situation that impacted campus yesterday afternoon, which is why we sent out five emergency alerts to ensure public safety,” said Christine Mahoney, a spokesperson for the university.
Mahoney also commented on the strong collaboration between CUPD and BPD that helped disseminate public information to aid in safety.

Update #2: At 3:53 p.m. the Boulder Police Department issued a shelter-in-place order for the area of 40th and 41st streets between Table Mesa Dr and Martin Dr while they work with SWAT to take an armed man into custody, the department said in a post to X, formerly known as Twitter. The area is about two miles south of campus.
BPD said the incident is connected to the earlier incident on CU Boulder’s campus. A university alert said there is no threat to campus and advised people to follow BPD for updates.
Update: The Folsom garage has been secured and the shelter-in-place on the University of Colorado Boulder’s campus has been lifted, according to a new alert.
At approximately 2:45 p.m., the University of Colorado Boulder issued an emergency alert regarding a “large police presence” at the Folsom Parking Garage and Champions Center on campus.
The alert asked all recipients to avoid the stadium area, including the Champion Center, and shelter in place. A third alert issued shortly after 3 p.m. said CUPD was securing the Folsom Parking Garage. The alert asked anyone in the garage to exit immediately and follow police instructions.
Spokespeople for the university could not immediately be reached for comment.
