The University of Colorado Boulder sent an urgent alert on Tuesday, issuing an administrative campus closure for Wednesday. The closure comes due to forecasted high winds and planned power outages. All essential services like housing, dining and safety will still function during the closure.
All winter session classes, including online classes, will be cancelled. Campus events, facilities and venues may also be closed or cancelled depending on their operational status. The alert advised staying clear of downed power lines and branches.
Most faculty and staff are not expected to work during the closure, excluding essential service workers. Employees will be granted administrative leave for their scheduled work hours during the closure. Employees involved in any scheduled multi-campus virtual meetings, not about the closure, will receive communications as early as possible.
The alert comes after CU issued an advisory around 1 p.m. explaining CU campus would be a part of a Public Safety Power Shutoff by Xcel Energy. The planned outage is intended to reduce the risk of wildfires after the National Weather Service issued a Red Flag Warning in Boulder.
While the advisory said the outage was planned to begin at noon, Xcel Energy has since updated it to 10 a.m.
CU will communicate any additional impacts on campus for Thursday by midday on Wednesday.
