Colorado Buffaloes Women’s Soccer, huddling before they face the University of Utah Valley on Friday, Nov. 14th, 2025 (Remi Krupinski/CU Independent).
Undefeated on their home turf, the No. 24 Colorado soccer team looks to defend its streak at Prentup Field while continuing its climb toward the national top 10 ranking.
While Colorado’s offense is what scores the goals, it’s the defense that is really holding strong this season. The Buffaloes have scored 28 goals this year, while only allowing 11 balls past the keeper.
One of the highlights of the season was when CU didn’t allow Army to take a single shot in the Buffs’ 6-0 win on Aug. 16, setting a program record for the fewest opponent shots in a match. Colorado’s defense has been led by senior team captain Faith Leyba, who’s played 920 minutes through her first 11 games.
Although CU’s built a good defense, the one keeping the balls from the back of the net is freshman Brooke Goerish. She entered the season competing for the goalkeeping job and ended up replacing All-American Jordan Nytes. Even with CU’s loss against Texas Tech, Goerish still recorded five saves through the game, three of them being in the first half alone.
Colorado’s offensive push has been anchored by senior team captain Reagan Kotschau, who got the Buffs 20 points through her role in scoring goals and assisting. Kotchau’s points have come from seven goals and six assists throughout the season. She has had three game-winning goals this season, one of them being her penalty kick, delivering CU the 1-0 win over Iowa State on Sept. 17.
The Buffaloes’ achievements at Prentup Field have been guided by head coach Danny Sanchez, now in his 15th year managing the team. Sanchez came into this campaign holding the record for most victories in program history, having directed CU to nine NCAA Tournament bids. That veteran leadership proves crucial as Colorado strives to keep their unbeaten mark intact on their home pitch during the rest of their Big 12 schedule.
A standout moment in Colorado’s season unfolded at Prentup Field when they played No. 10 West Virginia on Sept. 27.. Hope Leyba scored the first goal of the game during the 35th minute, and Reagan Kotschau followed up by converting a second-half penalty kick to seal a 2-0 triumph. That win marked CU’s fifth straight victory while bringing West Virginia’s 22-game regular-season unbeaten run to an end.
The Buffs ended their five-game winning streak against Texas Tech, but there is still hope of winning the Big 12. Baylor and Kansas are soon coming to Colorado’s home turf, as the Buffs aim to protect their winning streak on Prentup Field.
Baylor comes in on Thursday, Oct. 8, and Kansas comes in days later on Sunday, Oct. 11. The matches begin at 7 p.m. MT and 1 p.m. MT, respectively, and both will stream on ESPN+.
