Created in 1998 by the lead singer of “Blur” Damon Albarn and artist Jamie Hewlett, Gorillaz combines music, animation and an evolving fictional universe centered on four virtual members, 2-D, Murdoc Niccals, Noodle and Russel Hobbs. Behind the characters, Albarn works with a rotating cast of musicians to blend alternative rock, hip-hop, electronic music and pop, while Hewlett shapes the band’s visual identity and storytelling. That partnership makes the live production an extension of the project itself, pairing live musicians with the animated world audiences know from its videos. Gorillaz’s Sunday night show at Denver’s Ball Arena brought that concept to Colorado on their The Mountain Tour, their first extensive North American run in nearly four years. For Colorado listeners, its significance was the opportunity to experience a project that connects several musical communities through one shared audiovisual performance.
