CU men’s club lacrosse head coach John Galvin has stepped down from his position after seven years at the helm to explore new opportunities.

Assistant coach Rick Fleenor has been named as the interim head coach for the fall 2009 season while a national search is taking place.

Fleenor, who joined the CU coaching staff last season, played under Galvin as a midfield specialist from 2002 until he graduated from the university in 2005 with a double degree in journalism and business.

Galvin is leaving the program after a season in which the Buffs finished with a 15-7 overall record and earned a trip to the semifinals of the Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association national championships last May.

In his seven years with Colorado, Galvin compiled an overall record of 77-38, and brought the Buffs to the brink of a national championship in 2006 where they lost by one goal to rival Colorado State.

Last season, Galvin earned the 2009 Rocky Mountain Lacrosse Conference Coach-of-the-Year and is a board member on the Colorado Lacrosse Foundation.

Several people in the west region have been named as possible candidates for the head coaching job, including recently fired BYU head coach Jason Lamb.

In his time with BYU, Lamb has led the Cougars to eight RMLC Championships and three MCLA National Championships.

In the mean time, Fleenor will run Tuesday’s Lacrosse informational meeting and serve as the head coach of the Buffs for the fall season until a permanent replacement has been made.

Assistant coaches Dave Leach and Tate Price, along with academic coordinator and special assistant Peter McGraw, will remain on the staff.
