Buffs shut out by LSU, 7-0

The Tigers were too tough for the Buffs on Sunday.

The CU women’s tennis team became the prey to the relentless No. 65 Louisiana State University Lady Tigers Sunday afternoon at the Millennium Hotel Harvest House in Boulder.

The Buffs were looking to start their early spring season off to a 2-0 start after beating United States Air Force Academy 4-2 on Friday, but the Lady Tigers refused to lose their season opener. LSU has now won all five meetings it has had with the Buffs, including a 6-1 rout in Baton Rouge last year.

“We didn’t get the result we wanted in regards to a win, but we continue to see progress,” said CU head coach Nicole Kenneally to the Sports Information Department. “Playing a SEC team before we go against our Pac-12 matchups is only going to help, and playing a team like LSU this early in the season will allow us to use this match to see what we are doing well and what to keep working on.”

It wasn’t all bad, though — the Buffs did win one match. The No. 3 doubles team, made up of senior Ania Anuszkiewicz and redshirt-sophomore Erin Sanders, defeated LSU’s Kaitlin Burns and Ariel Morton, 8-4.

As they prepare for more Pac-12 play, the Buffs will look to extend their matches. CU freshman Julyette Steur played the only match that went to three sets on Sunday, while all other CU athletes were swept in two sets.

The Buffs (1-1) head to Houston next weekend to take on two non-conference opponents. CU faces the University of Houston Cougars on Saturday and Stephen F. Austin State University on Sunday. On Feb. 11, the Buffs play in Boulder again, taking on Colorado State at the Meadows Club.
