After the final round of the 58th Annual New Mexico Tucker Invitational in Albuquerque on Saturday, the CU men’s golf team finished second as a team.
The Buffs have competed at UNM Tucker for 58 straight years and have only placed this high as a team on two other occasions, once in 1956 and once in 1981. The Buffs have never won the tournament.
Colorado finished 29 strokes behind the winning team, host University of New Mexico, but beat out third and fourth-place teams University of San Francisco and Brigham Young University.
The CU golfers were led by senior Jason Burstyn and sophomore David Oraee, who both finished tied for seventh individually at 1-over par 217. Senior Beau Schoolcraft was the next scorer for the Buffs, tying for 13th overall with a 4-over 220. Schoolcraft’s finish was his third in the top 20 so far this fall.
Senior Derek Fribbs and freshman Philip Juel-Berg rounded out the team score for Colorado, tying for 38th and 53rd respectively. Junior Johnny Hayes, who competed as an individual, finished with a 14-over 230 to tie Juel-Berg in 53rd.
Colorado head coach Roy Edwards told the CU Sports Information Department that he was pleased with the second-place finish against tough competition.
“While we didn’t play our best today, Beau turned in a quality round and Jason and David had solid tournaments,” Edwards said. “We still matched the highest we’ve ever finished here, and it had been three decades since we finished this high. I don’t think any team in the country would have beaten New Mexico today.”
The Buffs’ team finish gave them a 37-2 record against Division I teams in the three tournaments they have played this fall. The team will compete next on Oct. 8-9 at the Pac-12 Conference Fall Preview in Portland.
