The Corner adds healthy Hill option

As the dreary and gray winter months settle over Boulder, a gleam of light is offered with a newly opened restaurant on the Hill, The Corner.

The location was formerly Del Taco and had been under construction for the better part of last semester. The previous Del Taco owner, Peter Howser, opened The Corner with Chris Grandinetti on Dec. 14.

With a menu as fresh and light as its minimalist interior, this restaurant offers healthy options in a fancier setting than usually found in the student-laden neighborhood. The Corner boasts all-day breakfast, salads, soups, sandwiches and five signature “Corner bowls.”

Salad picks, like most items on the menu, offer an array of food types ranging from the Asian Chicken Salad to the Roasted Beet and Goat Cheese. The latter is particularly tasty, with unique and well-proportioned flavors. Salads are available in two different sizes and the smaller is the perfect amount of food for a quick lunch between classes.

Their signature item, the five “Corner Bowls,” each come with a house sauce, your daily dose of veggies and your choice of protein and grain. The bowls also have a wide range of culinary influences, allowing customers the opportunity to pick between the Spanish-inspired Latin Bowl or the Indian-inspired Coconut Curry Bowl.

Perhaps the most exciting part of the new restaurant is their frozen yogurt station, which, with rotating flavors, is a blessing to those who were tired of having to drive every time they craved this tasty snack. Try the salted caramel and vanilla twist.

Drinks available at the restaurant reflect its Boulder roots. A vending machine provides Boylan’s Natural Soda and employees brew locally made Ozo brand coffee, although the lattes are not as artfully done as the ones made in house.

The Corner’s biggest drawback is that pricing reflects its upscale take on student dining. A simple breakfast sandwich with avocado is $6 plus tax, and is one of the cheaper food items. Salads cost around $8, sandwiches $9 and bowls $10.

The Corner offers meals to go, but preparation time requires a bit of a wait.

The Corner is located at the southeast intersection of 13th Street and College Avenue on University Hill.
