Southern California’s Tomorrows Tulips have returned with their third studio album, “When.” Released on Burger Records, the album is a natural transition from their previous releases, still retaining their fuzzed-out, soft noise garage sound.
“When” lives up to the moniker of bummer pop with songs like “Confetti and Glue”: “When can I be happy again, check the expiration that I’m sufferin’.” “Down Turned Self Pity” also embodies this genre, wallowing in restlessness.
Although Tomorrows Tulips seem to have a washed-out case of the blues, these first songs help set the tone for some of their more post-punk, lighter grunge tracks, like the title track “When”.
Some tracks hint at the California (Costa Mesa, to be exact) sunshine. “Laying In The Sun” acts as an example of what one of the group’s more upbeat tunes can sound like. “Baby” also fits this description, with a mellow, pulsing beat, although the lyrics speak of being a tired lover.
One of the stronger tracks is “Glued To You.” It encapsulates the album’s omnipresent bummed-out vibes, and its driving beat allows the song to stand out against the others while hinting at other directions the band could take in future endeavors.
If you ever find yourself in a beach city on a foggy day, be sure to give Tomorrows Tulips’ “When” a spin for a fitting accompaniment.
