In its second home game of the young season, the University of Colorado women’s lacrosse team secured a convincing victory over Central Connecticut State University on Saturday, 15-3.
Junior midfielder Marissa Soto opened the game, scoring with a goal three minutes into the contest that put Central Connecticut up 1-0. It would be the Blue Devils‘ final lead of the match.
Colorado shook off Soto’s opening strike with three of its own over the next five minutes. Sophomore midfielder Darby Kiernan tallied two goals and junior attack Cali Castagnola added another to push the Buffaloes to a 3-1 lead at the 21-minute mark.
The Buffaloes dominated the remainder of the first half, amassing a 10-2 lead by halftime. Colorado was superior to Central Connecticut in virtually every statistical category, including shots (22 to 3), ground balls (17 to 11), turnovers (8 to 13) and free position shots, of which Colorado had six and scored on twice.
Colorado’s defense stifled the Blue Devils, leaving little for junior goalie Paige Soenksen to do as she faced only three shots from CCSU in the first period. Soenksen finished the game with four goals allowed on seven CCU shots.
In the first half alone, Colorado scored more goals (10) than Central Connecticut would attempt shots through the entire game (7). These goals came from Kiernan with four, Castagnola with one, sophomore attack Carly Cox with two and junior attack Katie Macleay with three.
Central Connecticut managed to score the second period’s opening goal as well with a strike from senior midfielder Falynn Mccartney near the 26-minute mark. But the Blue Devils could only muster one additional goal in the period, and failed to even keep pace with Colorado’s five second-half scores.
The Buffaloes remain undefeated at home, and move to 5-1 on the season. Colorado will take a two-week break before it plays Marist next in Boulder on Monday, March 21 at 3 p.m.
